  The Refuge Coffee House is a superior spot for food, drink, atmosphere, and service on the square in Carlinville.
  
  Their coffee is a dark roast, delicious, and affordable.
  
  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner items populate the menu. They really have a wide variety on the menu. I can't imagine that between eggs, wraps, sandwiches, salads, and more anyone not able to find something they like.
  
  Did I mention that they have beer? They also have wine. And they offer some specialty drinks too.
  
  The service is fast and friendly with the employees, on the whole, genuinely appearing to enjoy their jobs.
  
  Besides the outstanding coffee and overall ambiance/decor of The Refuge, their salads are top shelf. You can build your own off the menu or opt for a chopped salad (or others listed) like we did...twice! Offered with the salads are a nice choice of dressings which are all homemade.
  
  I had one of their chicken, avocado, bacon lil' wraps" and went with a house salad as my side. An improvement would be some sort of spread or condiment to add a little moisture to the wrap. Otherwise, it was just right.
  
  On our second visit, besides again ordering the excellent chopped salad which had sliced hard boiled eggs, shredded chicken, chick peas, feta cheese, cucumber, avocado and more, we each ordered a Hoagie. Well, the Hoagies were the reason I rated them 4 stars instead of 5.
  
  At around $12, they were way overpriced even considering the choice of one side that came with each Hoagie. The sides, I had baked beans and my partner had "macdaddy cheese", had a surprising flavor twist to them which was great.
  
  The Hoagie rolls were thick, though relatively light. The Buffalo Chicken Ranch and BLT "mixture" that was very, very thinly spread on the inside of each of our Hoagies needed help. The so-called BLT was an odd, miss the mark, blended spread version of a BLT. The Buffalo Chicken spread was only slightly closer to its title. Even with 3 times the "mixture" on these Hoagies they would have been overpriced.
  
  Tweak the recipe, double (at least) the mixture amount, and drop the price to the $7 range to make these Hoagies menu winners.
  
  Overall, I love The Refuge! Will definitely visit again on the next trip to Carlinville.
